ABOUT OUR SAILS

Sailcloth & Cut

Sailcloth

We manufacture our sails from a variety of high quality sail fabrics sourced from ONLY the world leading cloth suppliers such as Challenge, Contender, Dimension-Polyant and Bainbridge. Among our most common cloths are Premium US Dacron and Nylon, Marblehead, Warp Drive, Newport Pro Radial, Lite Skin and premium performance cruising laminates.

Sail cut

Cross-cut sails

Cross-cut sails are constructed from 2-dimensional panels of woven or laminated material stitched or glued together to form the sail. Using a method called broad seaming, the edges of the panels are given curvature so that when the assembled sail is pressurised by the wind, it assumes an efficient sailing shape. In essence, 2D segments have been assembled to emulate a 3D form.Crosscut sails have less seams and reduced fabric waste compared to tri-radial sail constructions which creates savings for the customer.

Woven Dacron Sailcloth

Dacron sails are selected by the majority of our clients who choose from our range of premium Dacrons such as Challenge Fastnet, Warp Drive and Marblehead, Challenge Newport Pro Radial, Contender Fibercon and Challenge High Modulus Dacrons for their all-around strength and good value. When longevity is the main concern, Dacron is the cloth of choice as it is resistant to most types of wear that a sail experiences during its lifetime. Dacron sails also have excellent UV resistance, they are virtually unaffected by bending and folding forces, and are resistant to chafe which is convenient when it comes to overlapping headsails.

Laminated Sailcloth

Laminated sails are often chosen by the sailor looking for peak performance. As the fibres buried between the laminates are virtually uncrimped (not woven in and out), there’s little or no initial stretch in taking up the crimp. Secondly the fibres used are less stretchy than the base fibres used in a polyester product. Thirdly, the fibres are aligned more accurately with the loads in the sail in a tri-radial or, ultimately, a membrane construction. All this results in a sail with superior shape holding characteristics. Our range includes such cloths as Dimension Polyant Lite Skin and Contender CDX.
