The Code C Sail by Rolly Tasker Sails

The Ultimate Off-Wind Cruising Sail

Modern cruising yachts often feature short, non-overlapping—or even self-tacking—headsails. These sails perform well upwind, but their efficiency drops significantly when bearing off. To maintain speed, enjoyment, and sailing performance on broader angles, a different type of headsail is essential.

That’s why Rolly Tasker Sails developed the Code C—a high-performance off-wind cruising sail specifically for modern yachts and short-handed sailors.

What Is the Code C?

The Code C (with “C” standing for Cruising) is a highly versatile reaching sail that blends the characteristics of a Code 0and an asymmetrical spinnaker. Often referred to as a “Tweener” sail, it covers a broad range of apparent wind angles—from 65° to 135°, and even up to 180° when used with a spinnaker pole. It replaces multiple light-wind sails with one, easy-to-use solution.

Perfect for light to medium winds, the Code C delivers power and balance on all reaching courses and can even be poled out to sail dead downwind.

Simple, Efficient Handling

Designed with cruising simplicity in mind, the Code C is flown “free-flying” on its own continuous-line furler, completely separate from the forestay. Setup is quick and hassle-free:

  • Pre-rig the sail before departure

  • Hoist it already furled

  • When ready, simply unfurl and go

Gybing is equally stress-free—just furl the sail, gybe the boat, then unfurl on the new tack. It’s as straightforward as using a Genoa.

Smart Design for Better Performance and Durability

  • Features an integrated anti-torsion luff cable made of pre-stressed, large-diameter Dyneema.

  • The straight luff design ensures even, consistent furling—reducing effort and minimizing wear.

  • Built from Premium Challenge Fibermax nylon, available in sizes from 32 to 150 square metres, tailored to your yacht.

This construction gives the Code C an extended lifespan and dependable furling action in real-world conditions.

Furler Setup & Positioning

To maximize performance, the Code C should be flown forward of the forestay and furling headsail, and ideally clear of the bow pulpit. On many yachts, this is easily done, especially if the forestay is set slightly aft or the boat has a short bow platform.

Important: If using a bow platform (e.g., anchor roller), ensure it’s structurally strong and well-supportedto handle the sail’s load. If in doubt, reach out to Rolly Tasker for assistance.

The sail is flown on a dedicated continuous-line furler, available through Rolly Tasker Sails.

Setting the Sail

  • Firm luff tension is key to avoiding sag and ensuring smooth furling.

  • Attach the sheets like a conventional headsail.

  • Keep the sail tightly furled and sheeted before departure.

To deploy:

  1. Bear away to reduce apparent wind.

  2. Furl in the jib.

  3. Unfurl the Code C—and sail away!

Furling the Sail

For best results:

  • Bear off to reduce pressure before furling.

  • This makes the process easier, quieter, and ensures a tidy, even roll.

Avoid furling under heavy load, as it may cause an uneven wrap (tight at the foot, loose at the head). If that happens:

  • Unfurl and try again, or

  • Drop the sail to prevent damage.

Why Choose the Code C?

If you sail short-handed, prefer relaxed cruising, or want to add more fun and performance to your off-wind sailing, the Code C is the sail you need. It brings together performance, ease of use, and robust construction—making it the ultimate off-wind solution for modern cruisers.

SELECTING YOUR NEW “CODE C”

WHAT SIZE DO I REQUIRE?

The luff length is the deciding factor when choosing the right size Code C.  As a general rule, if you are going to fly the Code C just above the front pulpit, then the luff length should be about the same length that the mast height is above the deck.

For a more accurate measurement, raise a tape measure up on the Spinnaker halyard until it’s at the full hoist position and measure down to where you would like the tack of the Code C furler to be – we’ll call this measurement "A".  If you have a bow sprite, this would be to the end of the bow sprite.  If you don’t, it will most likely be to the top of the forward railing (pulpit).

The size of the Code C is determined by the luff length. The luff length of the Code C should be measurement "A" less 600mm or the nearest size under.  For example, if the A measurement is 14.00 then the luff should be 14.00 - 0.6 = 13.40.  In referring to the sizing chart below you will see that the correct sail to choose is our #6 with luff length of 13.25
