How to Choose the Best Fabric for Downwind Sails

How to Choose the Best Fabric for Downwind Sails

Reaching and downwind sails are available in a wide variety of designs and your choice of sail will depend on the type of boat you have and the type of sailing you do.  If it is cruising with family or as a couple and your focus is on safe and easy handling, then our Code C  sail on a furler or our Asymmetrical Spinnaker with a Spinnaker sock/snuffer would be ideal.  If your choice is racing with crew then you will be after maximum performance which will entail specific design and cut of the sails and will vary depending on your situation.  As your choice of sails changes due to the above factors so will the fabrics that we make them out of.  Here is a closer look at the choices.

Best for All-Round Spinnakers and our Code C Sail

At Rolly Tasker Sails we use top quality, bullet-proof Spinnaker Nylons made by the leading sailcloth manufacturers such as Bainbridge, Contender Sailcloth and Challenge Sailcloth.  The spinnaker nylon Fibermax (made by Challenge Sailcloth) is a coated cruising spinnaker fabric used for spinnakers and in the case of our specially designed Code C sail we will use a heavier nylon which will last much longer than dedicated racing cloth.

The Challenge Fibermax Nylon is manufactured with Super Tenacity nylon fibres which provide excellent breaking and tear strength as well as abrasion resistance.  The very tight weave and dense construction provides low stretch and high performance.  It comes in a wide range of cloth weights, from 44 gsm (grams per square metre) to 144 gsm and the Challenge Fibermax is suitable for dinghies up to Superyachts.

Best for Code-Type Reaching Sails

Rolly Tasker Sails make the Code O, Code C sails from Challenge Fibermax, Challenge Code-Tec and Challenge Baltic Aramid sail cloth.  Code-Tec is made from a woven Polyester cloth and is specifically designed for the new generation of Asymmetric and Reaching Sails used on modern racing and cruising boats.  Code-Tec uses high Tenacity Fibres and proprietary immersion coating chemistry to make a high performance but durable fabric, it boasts low stretch, high tear strength and the ability to withstand repeated furls on modern roller furling systems.  As it is more durable than laminated sails, it is best suited for cruising or club racing boats.

For high-performance racing yachts, we use sophisticated laminates that have a superior shape-holding quality for maximum power also at a tighter wind angle such as the CZ laminate by Dimension-Polyant or Baltic’ Code Zero Laminate made by Challenge Sailcloth

These laminates are engineered for overall weight reduction without sacrificing load capability and strength.  They are designed with light weight taffetas, high tenacity aramid and polyester fibres, and superior films for high performance.
